            The eighth story in the series goes 'Back to the Future' with disappointing results.

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This week saw the release of a new Harry Potter book with 
midnight parties, fans dressed in costume and pre-orders that already 
have made it the bestselling book. It all feels so 2007.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But it's 2016 and <em>Harry Potter and the Cursed Child</em> is not 
your ordinary Potter book. For starters, this isn’t a book but the 
script of the two-part play that opened in London on July 30 (hours 
before the book went on sale). Second, this one takes place nineteen 
years later (opening with an extended version of the epilogue from <em>Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows</em>
 on platform 9 3/4). And third, and most important, this one isn’t 
written by J.K. Rowling herself, making it the first one not written by 
the original creator. She helped come up with the basic story along with
 Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, but credit for the play script goes to 
Thorne alone (Tiffany directs).</div>

 so much nostalgia is perfect for a story that depends so heavily on 
nostalgia, the past and familiarity with the original seven books. A 
better title might have been <em>Harry Potter and the Back to the Future</em> (or for those that get the reference <em>Harry Potter and the Felicity Season 4B</em>) for a story that uses time travel to explore what ifs and alternate futures.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The best parts of <em>The Cursed Child</em> are the beginning and the
 epilogue. The story focuses on Albus Severus Potter’s arrival at 
Hogwarts, the Sorting Hat (as Albus feared he’s a Slytherin) and seeing 
friendships and alliances reconfigure in a new generation. Particularly 
interesting is the friendship that develops between Albus and Scorpius 
Malfoy, each so unlike their fathers, and the character of Rose 
Granger-Weasley, also so unlike her parents. (For starters, she’s an 
epically good quidditch player.) It is the most Rowling-esque part of 
the story and frankly the most fun.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Seeing how the children of Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny and Draco are 
both like their parents and also distinct characters is fascinating and 
the relationship between Albus and Scorpius feels genuine (though 
Rowling had a better ear for kid’s dialogue than Thorne). Part of me 
wished this was book one of <em>Harry Potter: The Next Generation </em>and the story really luxuriated in everyday life at Hogwarts ithe same way as original book, <em>Harry </em></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Instead, <em>The Cursed Child</em> becomes a convoluted time-travel 
adventure that honestly is a bit of a slog. Without giving away too many
 plot details, Albus and Scorpius travel back in time to save a life and
 in doing so they set off a domino wave of changes that radically alter 
the present. Like in <em>Back to the Future</em>, further attempts to 
fix the timeline result in more changes and still more attempts to make 
it right, even as their parents are rushing to rescue them. Some of the 
alternate future versions of familiar characters are fun and others 
don’t quite work. But understanding any of it assumes a pretty deep 
familiarity with the Potterverse. This isn’t a story accessible to 
newcomers (in the way the upcoming <em>Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them</em> movie appears to be) but one designed to service the existing fanbase.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
J.K. Rowling should be applauded for pushing the boundaries of form. 
The easiest thing for her to do would have been to just write a new book
 — or even skip the new book and got right to the movie. Doing a play is
 a daring creative choice, especially for a multi-billion franchise like
 <em>Harry Potter</em>. (Imagine if <em>Star Wars: The Force Awakens</em>
 had started as a play.). This story would definitely be more fun to see
 performed on stage. Rowling also deserves credit for giving the 
characters over to someone else to write. The story doesn’t always read 
like she wrote it and that gives it an appealing freshness.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But the big problem is <em>The Cursed Child</em> is less an original 
story than a remix of the existing Potter mythology. The been there, 
done that feeling to the whole thing is its greatest weakness. How the 
sins of the father (and the mother) weigh on their children is an 
interesting theme but it would have been better served exploring that 
idea in a truly original story and not one that rehashed the mythology 
of the previous seven books.  </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Let's hope that if there's a ninth story, it leaves the time travel behind. </div>

        Singer-actress Gloria DeHaven, the perky star of MGM musicals
 in the 1940s and a stalwart of show business for more than six decades,
 has died. She was 91.<br />

DeHaven, who made her screen debut in Charlie Chaplin’s <em>Modern Times</em>
 (1936) as Paulette Goddard's kid sister — her father served as an 
assistant director on the film — died Saturday while in hospice care in 
Las Vegas, her daughter, Faith Fincher-Finkelstein, told <em>The Hollywood Reporter</em>. DeHaven suffered a stroke about three months ago, she said.<br />

The vivacious DeHaven, a studio player at MGM, appeared in a number of top films with leading stars, including <em>Thousands Cheer </em>(1943) with Gene Kelly;<em>Two Girls and a Sailor</em> (1944) with June Allyson and Van Johnson; <em>Step Lively</em> (1944) with Frank Sinatra; <em>Summer Holiday</em> (1948) with Mickey Rooney; <em>The Doctor and the Girl</em> (1949) with Glenn Ford and Nancy Reagan; <em>Two Tickets to Broadway</em> (1951) with Janet Leigh and Tony Martin; and <em>The Girl Rush</em> (1955) with Rosalind Russell.<br />

In <em>Three Little Words</em> (1950), a biography of Tin Pan Alley 
songwriters Bert Kalmar (played by Fred Astaire) and Harry Ruby (Red 
Skelton), DeHaven played her real-life mother, vaudeville star Flora 
Parker. She <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otlCe0-oFIU" target="_blank">sang</a> the 1920s tearjerker "Who’s Sorry Now?" in the film.<br />

DeHaven also performed in numerous other movies, including <em>Best Foot Forward</em> (1943), <em>Yes, Sir, That’s My Baby</em> (1949), <em>Summer Stock</em> (1950), <em>Down Among the Sheltering Palms</em> (1953), <em>So This Is Paris</em> (1954), <em>Won Ton Ton: The Dog Who Saved Hollywood</em> (1976) and the dreadful <em>Bog</em> (1979).<br />

Her last movie appearance came as a lovely widow and romantic interest of Jack Lemmon's character on the cruise-ship set <em>Out to Sea</em> (1997).<br />

She played Annie "Tippy-toes" Wylie, a bisexual CB radio aficionado 
who also had an affair with the husband of Louise Lasser's character, on
 the fabled Norman Lear syndicated series <em>Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman</em> and had a continuing role on the short-lived 1974 ABC series <em>Nakia</em>, starring Robert Forster.<br />

DeHaven also appeared on the soaps <em>As the World Turns</em>, <em>Ryan’s Hope </em>(playing a woman who for a while lived in a trailer camp) and <em>All My Children</em>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Gloria Mildred DeHaven was born July 23, 1925, in Los Angeles, the 
daughter of Parker and actor-director Carter DeHaven. They were billed 
in vaudeville as the song-and-dance team “Mr. and Mrs. Carter DeHaven.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Her father was good friends with Chaplin. "One day I came to visit my dad on the set [of <em>Modern Times</em>]
 and they needed two little girls to be in a shot with Paulette 
Goddard," she once recalled. "All they had us do was eat bananas and run
 around. I said, 'If this is show business, I'm definitely in!'"</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
She appeared in <em>Susan and God</em> (1940), the film version of a 
Broadway play that starred Joan Crawford, Fredric March and Rita 
Hayworth, and her first film under contract at MGM was <em>Best Foot Forward </em>with Lucille Ball. Later, she appeared in <em>The Thin Man Goes Home</em> (1944), the fifth of the six private detective films that starred William Powell and Myrna Loy.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the Big Band era, she was a featured vocalist with the Bob Crosby 
and Jan Savitt dance bands and later headlined gigs in Las Vegas, New 
York and London nightclubs.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
DeHaven made her Broadway debut as the star of the 1955 musical version of <em>Seventh Heaven</em> with Ricardo Montalban. She also toplined summer stock productions of <em>The Sound of Music</em>, <em>The Unsinkable Molly Brown</em>, <em>Hello, Dolly</em> and <em>Plaza Suite</em>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
DeHaven played many guest-starring roles on TV, beginning in the halcyon days of live TV and on such shows as <em>Robert Montgomery Presents</em>, <em>The Rifleman</em>, <em>The Defenders</em>, <em>Burke’s Law</em>, <em>Marcus Welby, M.D.</em>, <em>Wagon Train</em> and <em>Gunsmoke</em>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Later in her career, she appeared on <em>Fantasy Island</em>, <em>Quincy M.E.</em>, <em>The Love Boat</em>, <em>Highway to Heaven</em>, <em>Murder, She Wrote</em> and <em>Touched by an Angel</em>.</div>

In the late 1960s, she also hosted <em>Prize Movie</em>, a weekday morning series on WABC-TV in New York.</div>

 Sunday at PNC Park, one Pittsburgh Pirates fan performed a public 
service for everyone watching. He made a barehanded grab of a foul ball 
that was so perfect that it demonstrated to everyone exactly how it 
should be done.</div>

 let’s look at how exactly he got it done. It happened in the bottom of 
the eighth inning of the Pirates’ game against the Philadelphia 
Phillies. On the 3-2 pitch, catcher Elias Diaz hit the ball foul, and it
 careened toward the stands on the first base side. It sailed over the 
Phillies’ dugout, and it was headed right for a Pirates fan sitting with
 his son.</div>

The
 man reacted quickly, rising from his seat part way, both hands up in 
front of him protecting his face. His hands ended up forming a little 
basket that the ball zoomed right into. The force of the ball falling 
into his hands caused him to lean back and to the side somewhat, but he 
didn’t have to jump to make the catch, and he didn’t fall over when it 
was done. His son reacted smartly as well, getting out of the way of the
 screaming projectile instead of trying to help his dad catch it. (I 
can’t imagine that would have ended well.)</div>

It
 was a fantastic barehanded grab, and everyone around him was rightly 
impressed. Once he handed the ball to his son (after some well-deserved 
celebration), the camera showed him pointing to one of his fingers. 
Considering how fast the ball was traveling, it’s amazing that dude’s 
fingers were still attached at all. Hopefully he escaped unharmed and 
his only souvenir from that catch is that baseball and not a broken 
finger and a cast.</div>
